Washington -- Even as athletes from around the world gather in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, baseball is headed for what may be its final turn at bat as an Olympic sport.

Voting by secret ballot at their 2005 meeting in Singapore, members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to eliminate baseball -- and also softball -- from the quadrennial games starting in 2012. Washington -- When the U.S. Olympic team marches onto the field for the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Beijing August 8, the 596 American athletes will not just join fellow athletes from more than 200 nations around the world -- they will, in a very real way, be a microcosm of that world.

Washington -- Youssif, the 5-year-old Iraqi victim of an attack involving burning gasoline, is now in the United States receiving medical treatment thanks to close cooperation between the U.S. government, the Cable News Network (CNN) and private U.S. medical groups, says a consular officer formerly stationed in Baghdad.  

Jewell Evans, a U.S. diplomat who was assigned to Baghdad from 2006 to 2007, played a key role in facilitating Youssif and his family’s departure from Baghdad and their entry into the United States after CNN broadcast a report in August of the attack. more
