Exchange Visitor (J)
J1 visas are for academics, scientists, businesspersons or students going to the U.S. under the sponsorship of, or funded by, individual universities, private companies, the U.S. government, or their own government.
The organization sponsoring a J1 applicant must be approved by the Department of State. The approved organization sends a Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status (DS-2019) to the J1 applicant. The DS-2019 allows you to apply for a J1 visa and does not imply U.S. government endorsement of your program or assurance of J1 visa approval.
